How to check dial-up settings on a Mac
To check the dial-up connection settings, do the following on a Mac:
1. Open the Apple menu, and select System Preferences.
The System Preferences screen opens.
2. In the Internet & Network section, click on Network.
The Network window opens.
3. Make sure that the Show drop-down list displays Internal Modem. Then select the TCP/IP tab, and make sure that the Configure drop-down list displays Using PPP. Both selections are shown below:
In addition, make sure that the DNS Servers and Search Domains boxes are both empty.
4. Click on the PPP tab. A screen similar to the following displays:
5. In the Account Name section, type in your username. Then in the Password box, type in your password.
6. In the Telephone Number box, check for one of the following numbers, depending on your account type:
If your email address ends in @ntlworld:
Virgin Media free customers: 0800 519 0150
Virgin Media pay as you go customers: 0845 455 0520
If your email address ends in @blueyonder.co.uk:
All customers: 179
7. Click on the PPP Options button. The following screen displays:
8. Make sure that only the boxes shown above are ticked. These boxes are:
- Connect automatically when needed.
- Disconnect when user logs out.
- Redial if busy.
- Send PPP echo packets.
- Use TCP header compression.
If any other boxes are ticked, remove the tick by clicking on the box.
9. Click on OK, then click on the Proxies tab. The following screen displays:
10. Make sure that only the Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) box is ticked. If there are any other boxes are ticked, remove the tick by clicking on the box.
11. Click on the Modem tab. The following screen displays:
12. From the Modem: drop-down list, select your modem.
Note: If your modem is built-in, select Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90) from the list.
13. Click on Apply Now to complete the configuration.
That's it! Try again to connect.
