How to check the dial-up settings on Windows 2000
1. Click on Start, then move the cursor over Settings to display the Settings sub-menu. Then select Network and Dial-up Connections, and click on the required dial-up connection.
2. In the dialler window familiar from when you log on to the Internet, make sure that your User name is typed correctly and retype your Password (you received these with your Welcome pack).
3. Click on Properties. The General tab on the Properties windows displays, as shown below:
4. Check that the correct modem is selected (refer to the manual supplied with your computer for details).
5. Click on Configure. The Modem Properties window displays, as shown below:
6. Make sure that the Maximum speed of the modem is set to no greater than 57600bps.
7. Make sure that the Enable hardware flow control and Enable modem speaker check boxes are both ticked. (If not, click on the empty box to insert the tick.)
8. Click on OK. The General tab on the Properties window redisplays.
9. Check that the correct number is displayed in the Phone number: text box. The correct number is one of the following:
If your email address ends in @ntlworld:
Virgin Media free customers: 0800 519 0150
Virgin Media pay as you go customers: 0845 455 0520
If your email address ends in @blueyonder.co.uk:
All customers: 179
10. Check that the Area code text box is greyed out. (If Area code is not greyed out, untick the Use dialling rules check box.)
11. Select the Options tab. The following screen displays:
Make sure that only the options shown above are selected. If either Include Windows login domain or Redial if line is dropped are ticked, empty them by clicking on the tick.
12. Click on the Security tab. The following screen displays:
13. Make sure that Typical (recommended settings) is selected (that is, there is a dot in the circle), and that Allow unsecured password is selected from the drop-down list. Leave the rest of the options on this page unselected.
14. Select the Networking tab. The following screen displays:
15. Make sure that the Type of server I am calling drop-down list is set to PPP:Windows95/98/NT 4/2000,Internet. Then highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), (by clicking on it), and click on the Properties button. The following screen displays:
16. Make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are both selected (that is, there is a dot in the circle), and click on OK. This returns you to the Networking tab of the dialler.
17. Click on OK to close the window.
