How to check a Mac for automatic IP addressing

Follow this guide to make sure your Mac is set to obtain an IP address automatically.
Note that this feature should already be enabled by default.

1. Go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences….

2. Click Network.

Now follow the instructions below that are relevant to your type of connection: wireless (via AirPort) or wired (via Ethernet).

Wireless connections (AirPort)

3a. If you connect wirelessly, select the AirPort item and then select Advanced….

4a. Select the TCP/IP tab.

5a. Make sure that Configure IPv4 is set to Using DHCP.

6a. Click OK, and then close the Network window. If you made any changes to your settings, click Save when prompted. That's it – you're all done.

Wired connections (Ethernet)

3b. If you connect via an Ethernet cable, select the Ethernet item and then select Advanced….

4b. In the TCP/IP tab make sure that Configure IPv4 is set to Using DHCP.

5b. Click OK, and then close the Network window. If you made any changes to your settings, click Save when prompted. That's it – you're all done.
