How to empty the trash on a Mac

To empty the Trash on a Mac:

  1. Click on the Trash icon in the dock. The Trash screen displays.

  2. Check that there is nothing in the trash that you want to keep. (If there is, you can drag and drop the file from the Trash onto your computer).

  3. Click on the cog icon at the top of the screen. A drop-down menu displays, as shown below:



  4. Select Empty Trash from the drop-down menu. Your computer asks if you’re sure you want to delete all files from the Trash.

  5. Click on Yes to permanently delete them.
