How is wireless 'N' technology better than wireless 'G'?

To put it simply, wireless 'N' technology is newer and supports faster speeds than wireless 'G'. So, if you want to experience the fastest wireless broadband service that Virgin Media has to offer, wireless 'N' is the technology for you.

The benefits of wireless 'N'

Better coverage – your wireless signal is likely to be stronger around the house, compared to wireless 'G'.

Better range – the signal will travel further than a wireless 'G' signal, so your computers and devices won’t need to be as close to the router as before.

Better speeds – wireless 'N' gives you the fastest possible wireless broadband experience, so it’s the ideal partner for Virgin Media's 50Mb broadband.

A bit about wireless technology
Wireless 'N'

In techno-speak, the fastest wireless technology is 802.11n, which we call wireless 'N'. In theory, this means it supports transfer rates of up to 300Mb. That’s seriously fast!

Wireless 'N' equipment is compatible with older wireless standards, so a computer with wireless 'G' technology can connect to a wireless 'N' router just fine, though it won't boost the speed of your older equipment. If you’re using a wireless 'N'-compatible USB adapter, plug it into a USB 2.0 port to get the best performance.

Wireless 'G'

The 802.11g (wireless 'G') standard supports transfer rates of up to 54Mb, in theory. This works just fine for most broadband connections, though you’re best off with wireless ‘N’ if you’ve gone for one of our fastest broadband packages, like 50Mb.
