How to upgrade your old Telewest wireless router

Got an old Telewest wireless router? You might want to upgrade it if:

  • Your old wireless software doesn’t work with Windows Vista.
  • Your router needs to be upgraded for faster broadband.

Remember, you’ll need to upgrade your PC software as well as your wireless router, and this article will tell you how to do both.

A few things to remember
When you upgrade your router, your old settings will be replaced by new ones, so if you’ve set up any advanced settings, jot them down now, so you can set them up again after the upgrade.

Remember, you can carry on using your old router’s wireless adapters, so you won’t need to order new ones.

Ready to upgrade? Here’s how:

Step 1: First of all, download the new wireless router software. Just click the link below:

http://www.virginmedia.com/updates/wgr614v6_2.5.22_2.5.22.chk

To download the new software, save the file (called wgr614v6_2.5.22_2.5.22.chk) on your Desktop.

Now switch off your PC and router.

Step 2: While your PC and router are both switched off, connect your wireless router to the PC with your Ethernet cable (see the picture below for help) and make sure you’re using the LAN socket nearest to the power connector on the wireless router.

Next, switch on the router and then the PC.

Step 3: Now log into the wireless router software. Click this link: http://192.168.1.1 and you’ll see a window like this.

Type virginmedia into the Name box and the Security Passphrase box as well, then click Apply.

Now you’ll see a pop up box appear. Type virginmedia into the User name box and the Password box as well, then click OK.

Step 4:

Now you’ll see this window:

In the navigation bar on the left hand side, click Router Upgrade – you might have scroll down a bit.

Once you’ve clicked it, this window will come up:

Click the Browse button and you’ll see this window pop up in front. Use the Look in box to find the place on your PC (usually your Desktop) that the router software file was downloaded to.

Click on the file name to highlight it, then click Open. Now click Upload in the Router Upgrade window.

This window will come up:

Double check that you have selected the correct file (wgr614v6_2.5.21_2.5.22.chk) and click OK.

Great! Now your router will start uploading the software. Once it’s done, you’ll be taken back to the Router Upgrade window:

If you tried to upload the wrong file or a corrupt copy of the file, the router will show you an error message. If this happens, just try again.

Step 5:

We’re nearly there!

Now, find the Restore Factory Settings switch on the wireless router. It’s inside the little round hole on the back of the router:

Using a paperclip or pen point, press in gently (you’ll feel a slight click as the switch is pressed), hold for 5 seconds and then let go. Wait a few seconds until the green tick light on the front of the wireless router goes out.

The username and password for the router will now have changed to these default options.

New router passwordpassword

Step 6:

To make sure your router’s been upgraded, open your web browser and go to http://192.168.1.1. You’ll see a window like this:

This confirms that the wireless router’s upgraded. Now you can remove the Ethernet cable between the wireless router and the PC.

Step 7:

Almost done! Now it’s time to remove the old Telewest wireless home networking software from all the computers connected to the network. You might need to log in as an administrator to do this.

Click the Start button at the bottom left of the screen and choose Control Panel from the menu.

Now double-click on the Add or Remove Programs icon and you’ll see a list of installed programs. Scroll down until you see the blueyonder Wireless Connection Manager and click on it. Here’s what you’ll see:

Click on Change/Remove. A window will appear, asking you to confirm the removal, so click Yes. When the removal has finished, you’ll be asked to restart your computer. Click OK and, once the PC has restarted, your upgrade will be finished!

Step 8:

Now all you need to do is set up your wireless network. Since you won’t have a copy of the Virgin Media Wireless Setup CD, you’ll need to set up your wireless network connection manually.
