Broadband and Internet :

Broadband Connection

Should I use a wireless or a wired connection?

Wireless and wired connections both have great benefits, but they do have some drawbacks too. Check out the tables below for more info.

Wired connections

What’s great?

What’s not…

Faster and more robust than wireless connections

Not so flexible when positioning computers and devices because you need to be connected to your Super Hub using an Ethernet cable

More secure than wireless connections

Not so convenient for users of laptops and other mobile devices

Easy to set up and troubleshoot

Supports fewer connections than a wireless (usually just four, instead of more than 20)

No extra wireless equipment is needed

Wireless connections

What’s great?

What’s not…

No wires! So you can connect wherever you want

Performance can be affected by walls, electrical interference etc

Ideal for users of laptops and other mobile devices

You can connect more devices

Slower than wired connections

Very secure when used with the highest strength encryption (WPA)

You can connect your smart phone to your wireless network for faster browsing

Unauthorised users might try to use your connection (which is why security is so important)

A wireless USB adapter may be needed and top speeds require the latest PC and Virgin Media equipment

You may decide that a mixture of wired and wireless connections together is what's best for your setup. For example, you might want to have your games console hooked up with a wired connection for best performance while your laptop uses a wireless connection so that you’re not tied-down where you use it.
