How to use filters in Virgin Media Mail

Virgin Media Mail's filters allow you to manage the flow of incoming messages. Using filters, you can automatically label, archive, delete, star, or forward your mail, based on any combination of keywords, sender, recipients, and more.

Filters will detect when you receive a new email and automatically take any action that you pre-set.

Example 1:

To set up a filter from an existing message just follow these steps:

1. Open an email message you’d like to automatically filter, or simply check the box next to it in your Inbox.
2. From the More drop-down menu, select Filter messages like these.

3. Virgin Media Mail will automatically fill the 'From:' field, with the sender’s email address
4. You can add any details here to narrow the filter’s net
5. Click Create filter with this search when you’re done specifying the search criteria
6. Select the action(s) you would like the filter to take on filtered messages
7. If you'd like to apply the actions to existing messages as well as future ones, select the Also apply filter to x conversations below checkbox. The ‘x’ represents the numbers of messages Virgin Media Mail has found from your existing mail that match the criteria
8. Click Create Filter.

You don't have to limit your use of filters or labels to any single person or email address, though; that's just the beginning. You can create filters to detect messages with certain words in the subject line, the body of the email, or messages sent to a specific person, and automatically perform any of the actions shown in the image above. This means you can automatically apply a star to messages from your mum that contain the word 'cookies'. Get creative. You can always go back and perfect your filters; just click Settings and select the Filters tab.

To create a filter from scratch:

1. Click Settings (at the top-right of any Virgin Media Mail page).
2. Select the Filters heading
3. Click create a new filter
4. Set the parameters for the filter (as shown above)
5. Follow steps 5 to 8 in Example 1

To edit or delete existing filters:

1. Click Settings (at the top-right of any Virgin Media Mail page).
2. Click Filters.
3. Find the filter you'd like to change and click its edit link, or click delete to remove the filter.
4. If you're editing the filter, enter the updated criteria for the filter in the appropriate fields, and click Continue.
5. Update any actions and click Update Filter.

You can create an unlimited number of filters, but only 20 filters can forward to other addresses. You can maximise your filtered forwarding by combining filters that send to the same address.

Applying the same filter to many senders

You can use one filter to manage messages from a number of different email addresses. When creating your filter simply enter each email address in the From: field, separated by OR. Make sure to add parentheses around everything listed in the From: field.
