What is file sharing?

The ability to share files online using peer-to-peer (P2P) programs like Kazaa, Rapidshare, BearShare, Morpheus and LimeWire, can be very useful. You can also use Cloud sharing services such as Humyo and Dropbox.

Contrary to widespread belief the process is not illegal either, though the sharing of copyrighted files most certainly is.

What do I need to know?

Legal

Most music, video and software content is protected by copyright laws. If you copy illegal content to a CD, USB, your computer, or share with someone else you are breaking the law.

The penalties can be severe, particularly if you are sharing a large volume of files. The BPI has already targeted users uploading hundreds of files and there have been a number of prosecutions in the UK over the last few years.

Online safety

  • File sharing can be exploited to transmit viruses and Trojans to your computer. It could allow someone to gain complete control of your computer or steal your personal information.
  • Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software, such as Virgin Media Security, before you share files. Most peer-to-peer viruses and Trojans are disguised as something attractive (e.g. a bogus ad for free MP3 files). Users can suffer from computer problems or find that their personal information has been stolen. For more detailed information you should read our article: What exactly is Virgin Media Security?
  • Set up a specific file sharing directory or folder. This will prevent you from sharing more sensitive files.
  • Always use a firewall. Make sure you set it up to monitor outgoing connections as well as incoming. To learn more, read our article: What is a firewall?

You can find and download Virgin Media Security from My Virgin Media.
