Using labels
Labels do all the work of folders and give you an extra bonus: you can add more than one to a conversation. Once you've created a label, you can view all the messages with that label by searching, or by clicking the label name along the left side of any Virgin Media Mail page.
You can easily create, edit, and delete existing labels. Here's how:
To create a label:
- Select the message(s) you'd like to label by checking the box(es) next to the sender's name.
- Select New label from the More Actions... drop-down menu.
- Enter the name of the new label in the text box, and click OK.
To edit a label:
- Sign in to your Virgin Media Mail account.
- Click Edit labels at the bottom of the Labels box.
- Click rename next to the label you want to edit.
- Enter the new label name, and click OK.
To delete a label:
- Sign in to your Virgin Media Mail account.
- Click Edit labels at the bottom of the Labels box.
- Click remove label next to the label you want to delete.
- Confirm that you'd like to remove the label by clicking OK.
* Removing a label doesn't delete the messages previously categorised with that label.
After labeling a message or conversation, you can remove it from your inbox by archiving it. Then, you can view archived messages by clicking All Mail, or by clicking the label name along the left side of any Virgin Media Mail page.
Folders
Actually, Virgin Media Mail doesn't use folders. To help you organise your mail more effectively, Virgin Media Mail uses labels instead.
Here's why we think labels are better than folders:
| Labels | Folders |
| A conversation can have more than one label | You can only put a message in one folder |
| A conversation can be in several locations (Inbox, All Mail, Sent Mail, etc.) at once, making it easier to find later | You have to remember where you filed a message to retrieve it |
| You can search conversations by label | You can't always do folder-specific searches |
Editing labels
- Click Edit labels at the bottom of your Labels list.
- Click rename next to the label you want to edit.
- Enter the new label name, and click OK.
All the messages categorised under your old label name are now categorised under your new label. And, if the label you've edited is part of a filter, Virgin Media Mail automatically updates your filter settings so new messages are categorised with the new label's name.
Starred messages
Assign stars to special conversations or messages, or use them as a visual reminder that you need to follow-up on a message or conversation later.
Applying an action to everything in a label
You can apply the same action to all messages in a label or section of Virgin Media Mail (Inbox, Sent Mail, Spam, Bin, etc.), in just a few steps. Use this feature to archive all mail in your Inbox, apply labels to every message meeting certain criteria, delete all messages in Spam or Bin, or apply a filter to all relevant messages in your mail.
Here's how to take an action on all messages in a label or section of your mail:
- Open the view (Inbox, Sent Mail, etc.) containing the messages on which you'd like to take an action.
- Click Select: All along the top.
- Click the link that says Select all [number] conversations in [current view].
- Select the action you'd like to take from the More Actions... drop-down menu.
- Create a new filter
- Before clicking Create Filter, check the box next to Also apply filter to [number] conversations below.
- Click Spam or Bin.
- Click Empty Bin now or Delete all spam messages now to delete all messages.
