How to open an attachment in Outlook Express
Got an attachment? If you have, you’ll see a small paperclip icon next to the message in your Message List pane.
If the attachment is a supported picture file, then Outlook Express will display the file at the bottom of the Preview pane. To open it, just double-click the file.
You can open other types of file by clicking on the paperclip icon in the upper right corner of the Preview pane.
If you're trying to open attachments in other email clients we recommend visiting the website for your client. You can:
- find Outlook 2007 instructions on the Micrisoft website
- find Windows Mail instructions on the Microsoft website
- find Outlook 2010 instructions on the Microsoft website
- find Thunderbird instruction on the MozzillaZine website (unofficial Mozilla help)

Staying safe
One of the easiest ways for a virus to spread is by email. They can spread by emailing themselves to any addresses they find on an infected computer. Here’s how you can cut the chances of getting one:
- Use your anti-virus software to scan the attachment for viruses first. Our anti-virus software, Virgin Media Security, is free and you can download it here.
- Always be wary of attachments from people you don’t know. And even if you do know the sender, if you weren’t expecting an attachment, scan it before you open it.
- Any attachment whose name ends with .exe, .scr, .bat or .pif could easily be a virus. Don’t open these files unless you are expecting the attachment and always scan for viruses first.
