How to maximise security of your email account using Outlook Express

Making sure no one else can use your email account

Keeping your email safe and secure is easy with Outlook Express. You can set up a password for your email, so that every time you connect to download your messages, you’ll be asked to enter your password. Or, if you want to relax your security, you can set it to remember your password and download your email without asking for confirmation. Choose whichever one works best for you.

If you’ve got several people working on the same computer, Outlook Express can give each user a separate identity, which can be password protected. Click the File menu and go to Identities to add or change a profile.

Using a personal firewall

For added security, you can use a personal firewall. A firewall is a piece of software that can help prevent hackers from accessing your computer through the internet. Basically, a firewall is like the lock and chain on your front door. When you’re surfing the internet without a firewall, your door is open, but the chain (the firewall) prevents intruders (or hackers) getting inside.

As a Virgin Media customer, you get the benefit of free firewall and anti-virus protection with Virgin Media Security. To remind yourself exactly what this covers, just visit the Virgin Media Security page for details. And, if you haven’t downloaded it yet, you can do that there too.
