How do I set up Windows Mail?
Access your e-mail through a Web browser
Before you read on, did you know that you can access your Virgin Media Mail through a Web browser? This means you can send and receive messages through just about any computer with a connection to the Internet and also access other great features that are not available to users of e-mail software. Try it now: go to your Virgin Media Mail online by clicking the Email link in the top-right of virginmedia.com.E-mail settings - IMPORTANT
This guide is applicable to all Virgin Media customers, but is written using an example account with an e-mail address ending in @virginmedia.com. To view the detailed settings required for each type of Virgin Media account (other types are @virgin.net, @ntlworld.com and @blueyonder.co.uk), see the relevant article in the Help section.Manual configuration
Follow the guide below to configure Windows Mail for Windows Vista to send and receive your Virgin Media e-mail. If you've already set up your e-mail account in Windows Mail and simply need to check your existing settings, see 'How do I check my e-mail settings in Windows Mail?'.Launch Windows Mail from the Start menu. The icon looks like the one shown below.
Go to the Tools menu and select Accounts….

A window entitled 'Internet Accounts' will open. If you have not set up an e-mail account before, the window will appear empty.
Click the Add… button to set up your e-mail account.

Select E-mail Account from the list of account types and click Next.

Enter your name as you would like it to appear to others when you send them an e-mail. We recommend entering your real name, although any name can be used.
Click Next to continue.

Now enter your Virgin Media e-mail address. Remember that the part after the @ symbol should correspond to your type of account, e.g.,richard.branson@virginmedia.com.
Click Next to continue.

Now enter the e-mail server settings as follows.
Incoming e-mail server type | POP3 |
Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server | pop3.virginmedia.com |
Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name | smtp.virginmedia.com |
Outgoing server requires authentication | Ticked |

Click Next to continue.

Now enter the following settings.
E-mail username | Use entire e-mail address. e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com |
Password | Enter the password for your e-mail account. If you don't know the password for your account you can reset it using the forgotten password tool in My Virgin Media. |

Click Next to continue.

Tick the box labelled Do not download my e-mail at this time.
Click Finish to exit and return to the Internet Accounts window.

Your new e-mail account should now be listed in the Mail section of the Internet Accounts window.
Click the account name once to highlight it, and then click Properties.

A window entitled 'Properties' will now open with the General tab selected. This tab will show some of the information you entered in order to set up your e-mail account.
The name of the account (just above the Name field) can be edited. This can be useful if you have more than one e-mail account set up and would like an easy way to distinguish between accounts.
Check that the contents of the User Information section are correct, as follows.
Name | Your name as you would like it to appear to others when you send them an e-mail. We recommend entering your real name, although any name can be used. |
E-mail address | Your Virgin Media e-mail address. Remember that the part after the @ symbol should correspond to your type of account, e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com. |
Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing | Ticked |
Once you have checked these settings, select the Servers tab.

The Servers tab should contain the information you entered when you set up the e-mail account. Check that the settings are entered as follows.
Incoming mail (POP3) | pop3.virginmedia.com |
Outgoing mail (SMTP) | smtp.virginmedia.com |
E-mail username | Use entire e-mail address. e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com |
Password | Enter the password for your e-mail account |
Log on using Secure Password Authentication | Unticked |
My server requires authentication | Ticked |

Once you have checked these settings, click the Settings… button.

A window entitled 'Outgoing Mail Server' will open. Enter the following settings.
Log on using | Selected |
E-mail username | Use entire e-mail address. e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com |
Password | Enter the password for your e-mail account |
Log on using Secure Password Authentication | Unticked |

Click OK to return to the previous window and then select the Advanced tab.
In the Advanced tab, configure the following settings.
Outgoing mail (SMTP) | 465 |
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) | Ticked |
Incoming mail (POP3) | 995 |
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) | Ticked |

You may find that e-mail performance is improved if you move the Server Timeouts slider bar setting to 5 minutes.
Click OK to exit the Properties window, and then close the Internet Accounts window.

You are now ready to start using your e-mail account to send and receive messages.
