How do I set up Apple Mail on Mac OS X?

Access your email through a Web browser
Before you read on, did you know that you can access your Virgin Media Mail through a Web browser? This means you can send and receive messages through just about any computer with a connection to the Internet and also access other great features that are not available to users of email software. Try it now: go to your Virgin Media Mail online by clicking the Email link in the top-right of virginmedia.com.
Email settings - IMPORTANT
This guide is applicable to all Virgin Media customers, but is written using an example account with an email address ending in @virginmedia.com. If your Choose one of the following to view the detailed settings required for each type of Virgin Media account:

Email settings for addresses ending in @virgin.net

Email settings for addresses ending in @blueyonder.co.uk

Email settings for addresses ending in @ntlworld.com

Manual configuration
Follow the guide below to configure Apple Mail to send and receive your Virgin Media email. 

Launch Apple Mail from the Dock. The icon looks like the one shown below.

Go to the Mail menu and select Preferences…, which will open a new window.

Make sure that the Accounts tab is selected.  Any configured email accounts will be listed on the left-hand side of the page. Make sure to select your Virgin Media account before continuing.

Here is the information that should now be present in the Account Information tab.

 Account Type POP
 Description  Virgin Media
 Email Address  Use entire email address. e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com
 Full Name                Your name as you would like it to appear to others when you send them an email. We recommend entering your real name, although any name can be used.
 Incoming Mail Server  pop3.virginmedia.com
User Name  Use entire email address. e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com
PasswordEnter the password for your email account. If you don't know the password for your account you can reset it using the forgotten password tool in My Virgin Media.
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)Virgin Media
Use only this serverTicked

See above for settings for each type of Virgin Media email account.


Click the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) dropdown menu and select Edit SMTP Server List….

A new window will open that will show the servers set up for sending mail. Select the Account Information tab and make sure that you are looking at the item that relates to Virgin Media.

 Description Virgin Media
 Server Name smtp.virginmedia.com

See above for settings for each type of Virgin Media email account.

With the Virgin Media configuration still selected, click the Advanced tab.

The default option – Use default ports (25, 465, 587) – should be fine, or you can select the option to use a custom port, in which case enter 465 in the relevant field.

 Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)  Ticked
 Authentication Password
 User Name  Use entire email address. e.g., richard.branson@virginmedia.com
 Password  Enter the password for your email account

See above for settings for each type of Virgin Media email account.

Click OK to close this window and return to the Accounts window.

Once you have returned to the Accounts window, select the Advanced tab and make sure the following settings are configured.

 Port 995
 Use SSL  Ticked
 Authentication Password

Finally, close the Accounts window. You are now ready to start using your email account to send and receive messages.
